Dawn Matthews is an invited speaker at the Leon Thal Summit to be held on June 5-6, 2025 at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. She will present findings on the effects of repetitive head impact (RHI) on the brain in the first combination of data acquired in two major studies. The Professional Athlete Brain Health Study (PABHS), led by Dr. Charles Bernick at the Lou Ruvo Center, has acquired brain images and other data from more than 1,900 visits on over 750 boxers, mixed martial artists, martial artists, and other contact sports. The DIAGNOSE CTE study, led by Dr. Robert Stern of Boston University and collaborating PIs, acquired brain images and other comprehensive data on retired National Football League and College football players. ADM Diagnostics, Inc., through Small Business Innovation Research grants funded by the National Institute on Aging, has been applying advanced analytic methods to identify effects of RHI on brain volume, white matter tract integrity, and brain function. ADMdx is translating these findings into diagnostic tools to aid in the detection and differentiation of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy from other RHI effects and dementias such as Alzheimer’s Disease. The Leon Thal Summit is held to honor the life of Dr. Leon Thal, who contributed significantly to the understanding of Alzheimer’s Disease.
